Yumiko Kayukawa Returns With Appetite

1xRUN Thru Interview
Appetite by Yumiko Kayukawa

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Yumiko Kayukawa: This piece was presented for a show “Rock You In a Tatami Room” in 2011. It wasn’t a theme show, so I created pieces with just represented what I was feeling at the time.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Yumiko Kayukawa: I used Acrylic paint and ink on Canvas.

1xRun: When was the piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Yumiko Kayukawa: I did this piece back in 2011 and I would say it took me about 100 hours to finish.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Yumiko Kayukawa: The little eel chased by cranes and the girl eating Soba!

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Yumiko Kayukawa: As I love animals and wildlife, how they kill to survive is a passionate subject for me. Even a beautiful crane fights to live. It’s beautiful to me, just like they are dancing.

1xRun: To you, what is unique about this piece?
Yumiko Kayukawa: The innocent girl involved in the crane melee over an eel, while she is eating.

1xRun: Why do you feel people should buy this print?
Yumiko Kayukawa: I guess it’ll make you smile!

1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
Yumiko Kayukawa: Alive.

1xRun: You live in Seattle, Washington, what effects do you feel that the city has had on your artwork over the years?
Yumiko Kayukawa: People here in Seattle have their own vision of the Japanese style. It gives me inspiration.  Also, living in Seattle has changed my view of Japan. I am on the outside looking in.

1xRun: You recently had a show in June at Foley Gallery. Tell us a bit about the show and what fans got a chance to see?
Yumiko Kayukawa: I have been working more with a detail style. Almost like “special effects” artwork!

1xRun: Any other big plans or shows for the rest of the year that you’d like to share?
Yumiko Kayukawa: I am working on special edition box sets for my book “Japanese Wolf” right now. Also take a part of a group show ”The Coaster Show” at La Luz De Jesus gallery this September.

1xRun: Where else can people find you?
