1xRUN Thru Interview
New Horizons by Dabs Myla
1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it part of a recent group, series or show? If so, how did it fit into that grouping or theme?
Dabs Myla: This painting was from our our 2012 exhibition ‘Marvelous Expeditions’ at Thinkspace Gallery. The show was a split exhibition of our work and a show which we curated that featured work from our friends from all over the world. The theme of the show was about traveling. The piece New Horizons was about a trip we made the year before to New Orleans with some good friends of ours.
1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece?
Dabs Myla: The painting is acrylic on a cradled wood panel.
1xRUN: When was the piece painted and how long did it take?
Dabs Myla: This was the first piece that we worked on for the show…it would have been made sometime in May or June 2012 and took about 3 weeks to complete.
1xRUN: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Dabs Myla: There are three planes in the sky of the painting. They are the three friends that we went on the trip to New Orleans with.
1xRUN: Why should people buy this print?
Dabs Myla: We have wanted to release this print for a while now…it’s one of our favorite paintings that we have ever made.
1xRUN: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Dabs Myla: Fun!
1xRUN: You both will again be heading back to Pow Wow Hawaii this year, tell us a little bit about your experience last year and why you wanted to come back?
Dabs Myla: We had a blast last year in Hawaii and have been looking forward to making the trip back this year!
1xRUN: You both have traveled all over the world painting and have done various similar festivals, what sets Pow Wow apart?
Dabs Myla: Hawaii is one of the most amazing places in the world. The surroundings of the culture and people in Hawaii make the vibe of Pow Wow completely unique.
1xRUN: Had you both been there before?
Dabs Myla: Our first trip to Hawaii was for Pow Wow last year!
1xRUN: Each year Pow Wow has put together a continually improving line up, who are some artists you both personally are excited to see in February?
Dabs Myla: We are really looking forward to seeing the murals Wayne White and Glenn Barr will be working on this year! Check out the full artist list here!
1xRUN: You’re both always staying busy, bring us up to speed on the last 2-3 months for you?
Dabs Myla: Last month we visited Washington DC to paint a mural, we visited Miami for Art Basel and exhibited with Thinkspace at the Scope Art Fair.
1xRUN: Aside from Pow Wow, what is on your schedule the next few months here as 2014 gets into full swing here?
Dabs Myla: A lot of painting, a lot of traveling!
