1xRun Thru Interview
In The Chamber by Dan Quintana
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece? Was it part of a recent series or theme?
Dan Quintana: This piece was created using ink on vellum paper as part of my 2011 show, Tinsel. The exhibit took place at Copro gallery, Santa Monica, CA. This and a few other ink pieces were my first ink drawings to exhibit.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Dan Quintana: I feel what makes us human is the power to reason, choice and fate follow. I wanted to take an object/device/mechanism that applied with these three to represent the human form. What better form than something created by humans that can destroy humans, the gun. What I am still left wondering about is the forth element on what is in the chamber of the gun.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Dan Quintana: 2 days.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared with your other work?
Dan Quintana: It was one of the first ink drawings to exhibit ever in my art career.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Dan Quintana: It’s rad.
1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Dan Quintana: Bang.
1xRun: With each of your print RUNs with us they have been markedly different, can you talk about your different styles and what you get out of each medium that you work with?
Dan Quintana: I love working in both ink and charcoal, oil painting would be my primary medium and I love dipping into ink here and there. I am attached to both the surreal painting and illustration worlds that I’ll never shake one over the other but instead cross them. It’s satisfying to have best of all worlds.
1xRun: What mediums have you been working with on your latest pieces?
Dan Quintana: Charcoal.
1xRun: What have you been up to over the summer?
Dan Quintana: I am gearing up for my two person show at Scope/ Art Basel for Dec.
1xRun: What do you have coming up in next 2-3 months?
Dan Quintana: Scope in Miami. A couple of group shows for the fall.
