1xRun Thru Interview
Misfit Dream by Mimi Yoon
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, when was it created and with what materials?
Mimi Yoon: It was painted with acrylic on a roughly textured linen canvas and is embellished with rhinestones on her bikini top.1xRun: When was this piece drawn and created?
Mimi Yoon: I started the painting as a live painting piece during an event at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood at the end of November 2012. I set the piece aside then started to work on it again at the end of January 2013 and finished it about a month later.1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Mimi Yoon: The unraveling of the ski mask. The skirt with camouflage pattern of the world map. The peace symbol keychain. The bikini top rhinestoned in stars and stripes. The Mickey Mouse hat with the Mickey skull. The tattoo of a partial quote by Apple, Inc. on her arm. The origami boat symbolizing Dream…and of course, her.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Mimi Yoon: Since I’ve been wanting to paint a sister piece to “Bang Bang” and was working on the “Misfit” series (ski masked girls) when La Luz de Jesus Gallery invited me to live paint during one of their events, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to start a sexy piece that would look perfect next to “Bang Bang”. Then came the birth of “Misfit – Dream”. 1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Mimi Yoon: Each piece I paint is very unique to me. I was not at all subtle with using symbols in this piece. There’s a mix of satire, beauty, and hope in the painting, but it can be interpreted however each viewer sees.1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Mimi Yoon: It’s such a hard question to answer. I hope each buyer would see something(s) unique and special in the painting that resonates and would want to own one.1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Mimi Yoon: Truth.1xRun: 2012 was an extremely busy year for you, catch us up on what you’ve been doing lately?
Mimi Yoon: I’ve been doing lots of researching, sample making, and daydreaming : )
1xRun: What do you have planned for the next few months?
Mimi Yoon: I have a few featured shows coming up, and hope to finally launch my t-shirt line.
