Niark1 Returns With Fright Night

1xRun Thru Interview
Fright Night by Niark1

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece?
Niark1:  This piece was made from a few different pieces containing character illustrations that I have done before. The idea was to create a kind of “ totem” like I did in the past, but with a close up view on the face with a dark and nightmarish environment mixed with funny “cartoon” style. This piece has a few of my signature recurrent graphic elements that I have used in my graphic compositions, illustrations or when I’m making a weird painting. I usually like a lot of eyes with a big mouth with some sharp teeth.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Niark1: This piece was created last year in 2013 and was done entirely in vector on my computer.  I made some drawings and paintings with these characters. Generally with this kind of work I like to let it simmer for a bit then add details promptly. When I start I enjoy having no really idea of what I’m going to make, just starting something with some graphics elements adding some combinations and testing until I have something cool.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Niark1:  Well, as I explained before I have worked on it in several steps in parallel with other works. So this is a bit difficult to answer.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Niark1:  Well, this is unique because I did it ? ;)

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Niark1:  People should buy this print cause this is super cool! ( if they like monsters and dark funny stuffs too…)

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Niark1:  Graaaaaahhh.

1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to the last few months, how did 2013 wrap up for you?
Niark1:  Wow, a lot of things. I’m always working a lot on drawings, paintings, exhibitions, etc.. always a lot of cool projects. 2013 was great ! Hope 2014 will be better !

1xRun: You seem to be working in a few different mediums lately, what is your favorite aspect of working in each?
Niark1:  Well, I like to work on different mediums but it is mostly digital or painting/drawing, that permits me to find new ideas and to try to reproduce them on these different mediums. They are all complementary. When I use my computer generally I make very graphic designs and illustrations, but I also try to have something raw and textured like I can have when I use pencils / paintings. In the inverse when I draw or paint something sometimes I try to have some details and parts that are super graphic so I can have them when I use my computer.

1xRun: Your work seems to blend in a series of disparate ideas, do you work from any reference materials or is most of your work created from scratch?
Niark1: Generally I like to start from scratch and see how thing evolve and make some changes, then I always have some recurrent elements that I try to incorporate.  It’s a bit like cooking.

1xRun: Who are some people who have really been inspiring you to push yourself?
Niark1:  There are a lot of artists who have inspired me. I’ll most often see exhibitions in galleries and museums, that is always a source of motivation.

1xRun: What are your plans for the next 2-3 months here?
Niark1:  Just to keep drawing, panting and making weird stuff. Some exhibitions are being planned right now too. There will be many things that will happen next months, so to keep up it’s best to follow my news on my social networks below. ;)

1xRun: Where else can people find you?
