1xRun Thru Interview
Loss Prevention by Sever
1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece, is there an original or was it created specifically for this print?
Sever: This piece was originally painted in mid 2008 on a 4’ x 4’ wooden panel made by my boy Buds at my then home in Van Nuys, California. The print we’ve put together for this is based on that original piece.
1xRun: When was this piece created and what materials were used?
Sever: The original painting (that these prints are based off of) was done in July of 2008 with aerosol and acrylic paints. The prints were finished just recently in the summer of 2014.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Sever: I think it’s a fairly straight forward concept. Zorro, a Californian with an identity crisis takes delight in publicly humiliating the authorities and inspiring the people while leaving his mark along the way. I’ve substituted some borrowed Rustoleum for his trusty sword in this updated view of this historical figure.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Sever: Around 3-4 days on and off.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared with some of your other work?
Sever: I don’t make a lot of stuff to hang on walls so I guess the work being on a wood panel is unique because typically this would appear outdoors on what’s usually a temporary surface.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Sever: Because they connect with it for some reason I guess. When I buy anything, I’m investing not only in that individual’s work but also in the idea that in a small way I’m helping to fund more stuff from them in the future.
1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to the last few months, any big walls you’ve done you want to touch on?
Sever: Truthfully nothing unforgettable.Recently I finished this piece honoring Charles Darwin a few weeks back in my city. His research on evolution and the complexities of man is extremely trill. Working title: Origin of Feces.
1xRun: Any upcoming shows or events?
Sever: I’ve cut my schedule down to relax this summer so there’s stuff on deck but nothing really immediate. Just relaxing and taking it easy.
1xRun: Anybody you’ve been collaborating with lately that you’re excited about?
Sever: Worked with Risky on a few things up your way in March which is always an honor for me, but recently no. Will say, there is no shortage of people I admire and would feel honored to collaborate with, but for the time being no, not really.
1xRun: Anything else we didn’t cover you want to mention?
Sever: Recently supplied some old hi 8 footage and an interview for a MSK crew video that Mr Noah Banks is working on that will document the 25 or so years of our crew. So excited about seeing how that comes out.
