1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Victor Spinelli: The original was shot on film with a 65 year old Rollieflex so it is in negative form however this is the first time I am selling this piece as a limited series. The original photograph was taken in 2002 for a magazine cover in Ibiza, Spain and after the shoot was finished the octopuss was cooked in delicious portions of garlic, olive oil and rosemary to make a wonderful Mediterranean dish.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Victor Spinelli: I wanted to mix sea life and land life to create this juxtaposition.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Victor Spinelli: One morning to shoot. The idea took a lifetime.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Victor Spinelli: The size and limited print run.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Victor Spinelli: Only if you love it should you invest in your future.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Victor Spinelli: Arresting.
Victor Spinelli: I’ve been formulating a big sculpture project. It will be my first and the idea is, I think, very stimulating and controversial but thought provoking. I was fortunate to have the exclusive members-only ‘Norwood Club’ in New York City grant me another collaboration in a show and I am opening another gallery at 516 West 25th Street in Chelsea on April 1st in conjunction with RaiseART. Yes, RaiseART.
1xRun: You recently opened up a gallery in China correct? Give us a little information on that, what sparked the idea and how did it come to fruition?
Victor Spinelli: One of my American collectors partnered up with me as most of his business is in China. We are actually opening up a bigger location within the Wuxi Film Studios, the biggest in China and maybe the world. The gallery will be on the “lot” and we are going to add different elements like a cafe bar, Champagne bar and an art book store plus more.
1xRun: Any new artists that have really been inspiring you as of late?
Victor Spinelli: Phlegm.
